How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign is based on the same principles that are the foundation of traditional orthodontic treatment. Forces are applied to the teeth in order to get them to move into the correct positions, and those forces are applied in a deliberate and sequential manner. However, with Invisalign, clear plastic trays are used to move the teeth rather than brackets and wires. The dentist will give the patient a series of Invisalign trays, and the patient must switch trays according to the provided schedule in order to achieve the desired results. Additionally, the trays must be worn at least 22 hours each day in order to produce the desired movement of the teeth.

They must be diligent about switching trays as directed by the dentist and wearing the trays for the recommended period of time each day. What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is more attractive, convenient and comfortable than standard braces.

Is Invisalign right for me?

Invisalign can be an effective treatment option for many patients. While the earliest versions of Invisalign were only suitable for fairly straightforward cases, the technology has advanced and Invisalign can now be effective in a range of scenarios, including malocclusions and severe crowding. The first step in this treatment process is to complete an evaluation at our office, in which the dentist will take x-rays, impressions and photos of your teeth in order to create a three-dimensional model. That model will then indicate the likely results in your case, giving you an opportunity to decide whether Invisalign can give you the smile that you want.

How long do I wear Invisalign?

After completing the assessment, your dentist will develop your treatment plan, which will determine the length of your treatment, among other factors. Each case is unique, but many patients are able to achieve their smile goals in about 6-12 months when they comply with the treatment plan. If you do not follow the treatment plan, the timeline may be longer than expected. Keep in mind that you will probably start to see your results fairly early in the process, typically within the first few months of treatment. This can be a significant motivating factor to follow your dentist’s directions.

Is Invisalign covered by insurance?

Orthodontic treatment is sometimes covered under dental insurance, but the benefit may be restricted to patients under 18 years of age or patients who have not previously completed a round of orthodontic treatment.
